We may finally have ourselves a Kentucky Derby! If you have been following along, all along I have been slow to get on the War Pass bandwagon thinking his pedigree would catch up with him, plus his all out running style wouldn't fit the derby profile unless he was the absolute lone speed.
In the Tampa Bay Derby, I saw a tired horse, or a horse with not much heart, or maybe now the rumors are a sick horse. I'm in the camp that says they will either train up to the Derby, or announce that he is out for awhile.
Lets review CQ scores of the 3 races. The Tampa Bay Derby actually gets a score of 3. There was a challenge at the half time pole, Atoned made a 3 wide bid entering the stretch and Big Truck ran by him late. Not a bad race and Big Truck is a solid mid-level horse, who can make some money in the minor derbies and Jim Dandy type races.
The Rebel I must confess if you read my post on Friday, I made some money. Hit the trifecta, bet 3 horses 2 win and got the exacta.
The race itself was a 2. The pacesetter offered no resistance after 6 furlongs and Sierra Sunset is another hard hitter who seems to be better off the poly, or maybe Colonel John, Georgie Boy and El Gato Malo are better horses?
I'm going with the latter, I have been high on this crop of lefties since last fall. Colonel John, Into Mischief, Etched, El Gato Malo and Elysium Fields are the top of my list of contenders. With Etched in Dubai and Into Mischief hurt. That means Colonel John, and El Gato Malo go to the top of the list.
Meanwhile out West. The San Felipe comes up with a 3. The fractions were slow, but Bob Black Jack, Gayego and Georgie Boy all kept dibs on each other Gayego kicked clear but Georgie Boy just flat out ran him down and seemed to be galloping do it.
I will have more about Georgie Boy later this week. But He really is running the last part of the race like a turf race and you can do that on Polytrack, I also think Country Star is doing the same thing, I'm not high on her chances in the Oaks and I'm not so sure on Georgie Boy, but on the synthetic his style and action is perfect.
