Kentucky Derby Prep Recaps

Some quick notes on the weekend Kentucky Derby 2008 prep races.

El Gato Malo is a nice horse, the the true story in this race was the suicidal pace on the front end by Massive Drama and Tale of the Cat, throw in Sierrra Sunset and 1:07 and change was the 6 furlong split.  El Gato Malo got the perfect trip.  He is a nice Horse and seems to be able to rate which is more Tale of A Cat and Massive Drama can say.

The Lecomte was a competitive race and Z Fortune ran a nice race off the pace, he has put together 3 nice races now.  Some mid race moves made this a mildly competitive race and the fact that Z Fortune was able to rate and make a move outside horses shows that he has some racing ability.  Overall Z fortune is not among the top 15 contenders and could be exposed against some tougher competition.

Well, so much for sportsmanship. The top 3 West Coast horses will avoid each other in the next round of races.   The 3 California top contenders have mapped out their races for the spring.  Into Mischief has had 2 workouts since the Cash Call Futurity and will race on February 1st in the Beverly Lewis.   This looks like a 3 race prep with the Santa Anita Derby beind the final prep.

Meanwhile, Colonel John will wait until March 1st to make his 2008 debut, this means 2 preps before the Kentucky Derby.

El Gato Malo's next race will be March 15th.   Hmmm must be just random luck that all 3 are missing each other.

Meanwhile, it looks like War Pass, Majestic Warrior and now Colonel John are going the 2 race prep route to get to the Derby.  Just because Street Sense won last year, this is still a bad sign.

El Gato Malo has decided on March 15th for his next race.
